colby_poloroidOn Oct. 30, 2005 I experienced every parents worst nightmare – the loss of a child. He was 21 years old with his whole life ahead of him. He had a very strong spirit with a tender heart, however the curse of this generation got a hold on him. He died of an accidental drug overdose.

These times and the times ahead are filled with tremendous trials for our children and grandchildren. This experience has made me more determined that we as parents put our priorities in order. We MUST teach and then teach some more the gospel principles to our children. We must be open and discuss all the pitfalls that lie ahead and then equip them with the “tools” to face and conquer them. My bishop wrote me these words: “The Lord loves Colby as He loves you. Perhaps, for this reason Colby is no longer with us- that Satan’s chain had such a physical hold on him that he just couldn’t get free, so the Lord took him to free his spirit and, perhaps, even to release you from the sorrowful burden that only a parent with a struggling child can understand.”

It’s my prayer that things which matter most must never be at the mercy of things which matter least. Please make Family Home Evening a priority in your lives. I certainly don’t care if you use the lessons I offer or something else but do it! We owe it to our children.

May the Lord bless and keep you and constantly tell your children you love them. I did with Colby and that gives me comfort knowing he never doubted my love.
